Lough Erne Resort - Top Golfer Course Review

Designed by Nick Faldo, the golf course at Lough Erne is truly magnificent. Writers and players have compared it to Lough Lomond but in truth, it has an incredibly special feel all its own. It continues to accumulate the awards - Best New International Course of 2009, IGTOA Golf Resort of the Year 2010, Golf World's best par 3 in UK & Ireland (18th) amongst the many.

Located on the shores of Lower Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, 3 miles west of Enniskillen, it's set on a 600 acre peninsula between Castle Hume Lough and Lower Lough Erne.

As you would expect from Nick Faldo, the course is designed to not just take full advantage of the natural landscape and this makes for fourteen holes where the waters of the Loughs come into play, including a green surrounded on three sides by water, but it also places alot of emphasis on strategy. To score well you need to plot and hit the right strokes at the right time. Its the kind of test every single figure handicapper should crave for because ther'll be no bigger thrill than to tame Lough Erne.

The Faldo Championship Course hosted The Lough Erne Challenge, The Duel on The Lough a stroke play between Rory McIlroy and Padraig Harrington, which saw Rory McIlroy set The Faldo Course record of 68.

Dun Laoghaire Golf Club - Top Golfer Course Review

New to the TopGolfer Tour for 2012, the Hawtree course at Dun Laoghaire GC is going to test the best. The facilities and golf course at Dun Laoghaire are so impressive and the golf course is not only renowned for its immaculate conditioning but for gathering a long list of raving reviews from players and critics alike.

It has movement, clever hazards and demands the ability to shape the ball both off the tee and to the approach. Off the championship tees you're also going to need length! The greens by the way, are flawless and BIG.

Golf at Dun Laoghaire is one of those rounds you want to have again, and soon. Don't miss this chance to compete on it!

Naas Golf Club - Top Golfer Course Review

We've been asked for the last 2 years why we don't include the Junior Scratch Cup at Naas GC in our Tour. Well you can't say we don't listen! We're big fans of this event and the golf course at Naas. As recently as 2002 the club retained Jeff Howes to redesign the back 9 and a decade of maturity has paid huge dividends.

On the front 9, the fairways are lined by beautiful mature Elm, Beech and Chestnut trees which mean that you have to be consistent and accurate off the tee. The large greens have many subtle breaks and conditioning is always good.

The back 9 is framed by towering pines and clever bunkering demanding accuracy, shot-making ability and nouse! This is a great test and over 36-holes always finds a worthy champion.

The coastal setting at Blainroe GC will play fitting host to the final events on the 2012 TopGolfer Tour.

Just south of Wicklow town, famous architects Martin & Fred Hawtree have designed a great golf course which plays like a classic parkland but enjoys the influence of the sea wind to add spice and skill to every golf hole.

Blainroe holds the key to the last 2 invites to the Tour Championship with both the Junior & Senior Scratch Cups taking place on the 16th September and it is here that the final positions in the Order of Merit will be determined.

Located on the outskirts of Mallow in the Blackwater Valley and with views of the Galtees, the parkland golf course at Mallow GC is not only set in beautiful surroundings but this is a great test of golf.

We're really excited to include the Senior Scratch Cup at Mallow in our 2012 itinerary because we know of the reputation of the golf course amongst Cork players in this category and we expect a seriously competitive event - this is a title you want to win and will really have to earn.

The Championship Course at Grange Golf Club was designed by the great James Braid - for those uncultured among you, Braid was 5-time Open Champion and includes Gleneagles and Carnoustie in his design repertoire!

Over it's lifetime, the club has hosted numerous championships and great champions and in more recent years became known as the home of Paul McGinley who opened their swanky new clubhouse in 2003.

It is quite simply one of Dublin's most inviting and enjoyable parkland venues. The Grange GC Junior and Senior Scratch Cups are two titles that you really DO want in your golf career achievements.

The golf course at Killeen is a Craddock and Ruddy gem! If you haven't already tested yourself here the TopGolfer double-header on June 10th is an opportunity not to miss.

It really is classic parkland golf and a serious test from the championship tees. Killeen as many of you will know, has its fair share of TopGolfers, including the 2011 Kelkin Revive Order of Merit Champion Keith Cohalan! Its a club that has a habit of producing good teams and low handicap golfers which says everything about the golf course.

Our tour events at Killeen will undoubtedly be amongst the most popular on our 2012 schedule so book in early if at all possible.

Loughrea Golf Club - Top Golfer Course Review

Thanks to Loughrea Golf Club, the TopGolfer Tour is delighted to include a visit to Galway in 2012 - and we're even happier because in Loughrea we have a venue that TopGolfers will love.

They've been playing golf at Loughrea for just short of 100 years now and the 9 hole golf course was extended to 18 holes by Eddie Hackett in 1992. The members have continued to improve the length, layout and conditioning over the years and recently hosted the Connacht Junior Cup provincial qualifiers and the Connacht Cups and Shields Finals.

And for those of you who think Galway is still a 6hr return journey, we've clocked the golf club at under 1 hr 40 minutes from the M50 - so make this trip, it'll be worth it.

The Heritage - Top Golfer Course Review

The stunning golf course at The Heritage Resort has wooed pretty much everyone who has ever played it. Not just because its conditioning is usually immaculate, but because it is an eighteen holes unlike any other in Ireland. Not inland links, not traditional parkland, it is a beautiful blend of length and strategy.

Water comes into play on 10 holes and is prominent on both 9 and 18 which finish on either side of the lake in front of the clubhouse.

Tall fescue grass provides golden definition and its trademark bunkering (almost 100 throughout the course) is visually and strategically impressive.

This is a golf course for TopGolfers if ever there was one!

New Forest is a Peter McEvoy design with may similarities to his work at Powerscourt East, Rathsallagh and Fota. The course has a wonderfully traditional feel and as ever, his designs are more about strategy and having the ability to shape your shots than just brute power. The golf course has a reputation for being a really great test and has earned rave reviews from the critics that really matter - Irish golfers. This is the clubs' first Senior Scratch and we would encourage all TopGolfers in the Senior Scratch category to come out and support the event. Club's need to be commended for initiating Senior Scratches and New Forest deserved everyones support as it is being driven by the members of the club.

Warrenpoint GC - Top Golfer Course Review

The only TopGolfer Tour event in Ulster in 2011, we think we picked well when we chose to include the TopGolfer Senior Scratch Cup at Warrenpoint in this years schedule. Established in 1893, Warrenpoint Golf Club is an 18-Hole Parkland Course, situated in the Heart of County Down, six miles from the Newry City, and is set in part of the luxurious Hall Estate which is home to the famous Narrow Water Castle.

The course itself measures over 6000 yards in length, and is set in an area renowned for its natural beauty - the Mourne Mountains on one side and Carlingford Lough on the other, and is ranked as one of the top Parkland Courses in Northern Ireland. Our own TopGolfer ambassador Ronan Rafferty of course hails from the club and is one of a long list of illustrious players including Raymond Burns, Paddy Gribben and Jim Carvill.

South County GC - Top Golfer Course Review

The golf course at South County is quite traditional. If you haven't played it before what meets you will be quite unexpected from the predictability and precision of many new parkland golf courses.

Firstly there's a nice valley leading up to the course which creates a real sense of anticipation. Once you get out on to the turf, the openness and somewhat wild nature of the course has real appeal, it just feels like golf as it used to be where subtlety is king. Its littered with disguised landing areas, clever bunkering and deceptive carries and has a really nice use of water on a number of the holes, particularly the 15th. The finishing stretch is tough but fair and forces you in to making strategic decions that could be the making of your round.

We're really looking forward to our 'double-header' at South County this year because there's going to be a great buzz at the club with both events running together and we're going to find 2 great and deserved qualifiers for the Tour Championship.

Now we're betting that a few of you will have heard quite a bit about Concra Wood. You've probably heard nothing but good reports as well but still haven't had the chance to get to Monaghan to play it. Well, the TopGolfer Junior Scratch is the perfect excuse to try out this really impressive new course and home to Castleblaney Golf Club.

If you don't already know, the course was designed by Christy O'Connor Snr and Jnr in a unique collaboration. As well as the spectacular setting its the golf holes that you'll remember most when you come away. You'll remember the par four 3rd, which sweeps gently towards the lakeside green; the double dogleg par five 4th with its terrifying approach to a water-protected green; and the valley-like 8th, which falls from the tee and then arcs up to the green. The dramatic 10th offers an introduction to yet another part of Lough Muckno, the par 3 12th is a match for any in Ireland, while the 15th and 16th offer challenging tee shots across the lake.

Make the effort to travel - it's an event and a course that'll make every mile worthwhile.

All that needs to be said here really is - designer, Alister Mackenzie. Cork Golf Club is without doubt one of our best, and for some reason most unappreciated golf courses in Ireland. It has everything - grace, strategy, maturity, history, a beautiful setting and has recently undergone some pretty serious upgrade work which is sure to enhance its reputation even further. Its not a course that you get a chance to play in a competitive environment so the TopGolfer Junior Scratch here is absolutely one for the purist no matter where in the country you live - because this one os going to be worth the journey. always under appreciate by those Founded in 1888 and redesigned in 1927 by Alister Mackenzie, this championship parkland course is as graceful and mature as its age would suggest.

K Club - Top Golfer Course Review

Do we really need to do much by way of describing the K Club? Host to the 2006 Ryder Cup, The Palmer Course at The K Club is one of Ireland's most prestegeous and exciting parkland golf courses. The Smurfit Course has been the venue for numerous European Open's and together they make up one of the world's finest golf resorts.

Now we know that there may be those who feel that the cost of entry for these two tour events are steep. They are both by some way our most expensive events. Having said that our feeling was that you don't often have the chance to play competitively over the Ryder Cup course and these rates are at least 65% cheaper than the rack rate green fee for this time of year so on balance we think there's going to be great demand for places.

The TopGolfer Junior Scratch Cup will be an 18-hole tournament over the Palmer Ryder Cup Course. The entry fee will be €80.
The TopGolfer Senior Scratch Cup will be a 36-hole tournament with 18 holes on each course. The entry fee including a bite between rounds will be €90.

Lee Valley - Top Golfer Course Review

The Junior Scratch Cup at Lee Valley last year was a belter with over 160 competitors. The golf course - and particularly the greens - was immaculate and we can't wait to get back this year. We don't have many Junior Scratch's in the South so for everyone in this handicap bracket in Cork and Kerry in particular, this is a rare opportunity to qualify for the Tour Championship on your own doorstep.

The Christy O’Connor Jnr. golf course at Lee Valley has steadily built a reputation for the quality of its condition and the challenge it lays down from the back tees. Shane Lowry’s win in 2009 at the clubs Senior Scratch was a great feather in the cap and has helped to raise the awareness of the golf course and the quality of the events run by the club.

This was Christy O’Connor’s home for many years, and in fact could be suggested his favourite Irish parkland design. The golf course at Mount Wolseley is really impressive. It’s big, lush, mature and what’s another good word ….. ahhhh yes, majestic. It’s often overlooked as one of the country’s better parkland courses, maybe because it’s a little more remote than most or doesn’t wine and dine the right people. We think it deserves more recognition and is a must play this year - the TopGolfer Junior Scratch on a sunny August Sunday offers the perfect opportunity!

The strong layout at Dunmurry Springs is now complemented by a very fine clubhouse which has been anticipated for the last few years. The course has always been well received for both its condition and its challenge.

The eighth is the pick of the front nine, a belter of a par 4 while the back nine is littered with great golf holes including ten, eleven, twelve and sixteen all of which are favourites of ours. This proved a really tough challenge last year and we're betting its going to prove as tough this year.

Dromoland used to be a little resort course that really wasn’t on anyone’s radar. Then they got Ron Kirby to do a number on it and he created an eighteen that does justice to the castle and the estate. The front nine is a little light and its where you’ve got to make a score because the back nine is different, in particular the last three holes that can devour your card very easily.

Dromoland is a fantastic round of golf. It backs it up with a really impressive golf academy and the clubhouse is home to one of the very best burgers in the business.

The Junior Scratch at Rathsallagh kicks off a very busy run of events on the TopGolfer Tour. The fantastic Wicklow venue will be marked down early by many as an event not to miss. The course is beautifully laid out with some outstanding golf holes, it’s always in fantastic condition and we love the atmosphere of the place. The clubhouse at Rathsallagh has that special something too….informal, big fire, and they do some great barbecues in the summer evenings.

Brendan McDaid has helped develop a very talented group of Juniors at Rathsallagh, so there may well be some serious competition from the Rathsallagh members. Its a midweek event so won't suit everyone but that means better chance of qualifying for the Tour Championship and a better chance of good Order of Merit Points!!!

We think the links at Arklow Golf Club doesn’t get the credit is deserves. Maybe it’s not brash enough, or ‘in vogue’, or maybe ‘Arklow-ites’ aren’t as great at talking themselves up as others. Maybe, well lets face it we are, spoilt for great links in this country, but if you haven’t played Arklow in a while or maybe never before, then get there and make up your own mind. This is a brilliant round of golf and a great club.

Holes fifteen to eighteen are the making of your round , eighteen in particular which is 556 yards is a great finish.

Christy O’Connor seems to have been the length and breadth of Ireland designing golf courses. Knightsbrook has his hands all over it combining lots of length and plenty of water hazards to add a little spice. The course is known for the condition of its greens, but it deserves more credit than that. It’s a great layout for a scratch cup and eighteen is a unique finishing par three which could be interesting if the event is close coming to the last.

Castle - Top Golfer Course Review

We don’t believe in golf course rankings, they’re a lot of nonsense........BUT the golf course at Castle Golf Club is always right up there – certainly one of the top 25 parklands in Ireland (So what we're saying is we like rankings when we agree with them!).

The design has a strong Harry Colt stamp. It’s a magnificent city parkland with a great history of hosting Ireland’s top golfers over the years including Harry Bradshaw, Jimmy Bruen, Joe Carr and Fred Daly.

The course isn’t a monster, but it takes guile and skill – it’s always immaculate and the club upgraded all its greens a number of years ago and they are superb. The TopGolfer Junior Scratch was a BIG day last year with well over 120 competitors, which for a Friday just shows how popular the golf course is. We expect it to be even bigger this year.

Enniscorthy - Top Golfer Course Review

Enniscorthy is one of Wexfords great members clubs. By that we mean it’s home to a very fine parkland golf course (Hackett, Ruddy and Howes have all had input) and a big and loyal membership. Its not seen as a must play by many who visit the south east or look for an open week to compete in, but it should be! If you haven’t played it yet…shame on you. If you have, well let us know your thoughts in our forum.

Rosslare - Top Golfer Course Review

We’re big fans of Rosslare. Being a links in the South East is a tough job but someones gotta do it and Rosslare does it very, very well. John Taylor had a modest hand in the course design way back over 100 years ago and any man that can plot Birkdale, well he’s got some talent hasn’t he.

Its not a beast, just 6,800 yards, but it has some bite and the club just has one of those great feels to it…traditional and warm. This is a great place to play golf. Simple.

Fota Island - Top Golfer Course Review

Fota, well, its magnificent isn’t it. The Deerpark course is one of the finest parkland eighteens in Ireland and everything about the club has class. It’s big, impressive, challenging, hosted Irish Opens and Irish Amateurs over the years, and is always in top condition.

For many, the par five 10th is a favourite hole. It tunnels through the trees with a sharp dog-leg leaving a fantastic approach into a lakeside green. The multi-tiered 18th green in front of the clubhouse sets up a tense and risk/reward finish.
